Chief Operating Officer Appointment

Following a recommendation from the HM Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate and after a fair and open competition the Director of the SFO has appointed Mark Thompson, latterly the Head of its Proceeds of Crime Division and Chief Finance Officer, as its Chief Operating Officer.
Mark will report to the Director on matters concerning governance structure and corporate services, including oversight of Human Resources, Finance, Information Technology and Strategic Relations.
SFO Director David Green CB QC said:
“I am extremely pleased to appoint Mark as Chief Operating Officer. Mark will bring further cohesion and clarity to the way the SFO conducts its corporate and business responsibilities in support of our casework and a strong focus on ensuring value for money.”
Mark Thompson said:
“I am very pleased to have this opportunity to help in driving further improvement in the SFO’s performance. I will be looking to use my broad experience of several different roles at the SFO to strengthen our corporate services functions.”
Notes:
- The creation of a new Chief Operating Officer post follows a recommendation in HMCPSI’s report, SFO Governance Arrangements. It is at civil service grade SCS2.
- An experienced financial investigator, Mark Thompson joined the SFO in 2004. Prior to joining the SFO, Mark started his career as a police officer with the Metropolitan Police before qualifying as a chartered accountant in 1997 and working for the National Audit Office and KPMG Forensic. He has headed the Proceeds of Crime Division since 2012 and in addition became its Chief Finance Officer in May 2015.
